Elio’s

Broken Heart

We hold a deep belief that life is an invaluable gift, and our unwavering mission is to provide compassionate care to those who place their trust in us. Elio’s inspiring story serves as a testament to the transformative power of trust, the marvels of cutting-edge technology, and the dedication of our team to make a profound difference in the lives of our patients.

Roles Reversed as ICU Nurse Elio Becomes a Patient Undergoing Revolutionary Robotic Heart Surgery

For over 15 years, Elio has walked the halls of Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital as a dedicated cardiothoracic intensive care unit nurse. However, when the 38-year-old father of two found himself on the other side of the bed, facing heart surgery to address his worsening mitral valve regurgitation, he initially hesitated. “I thought it would be awkward seeing all the people I work with and feeling so vulnerable,” he admitted. Yet, as he reflected on the quality of the people he worked alongside, his fears quickly dissipated. “I knew I would be in great hands,” he said, placing his trust in his colleagues and friends who had become like family.

Advanced Robotic Surgery Technology

RPA Hospital takes immense pride in being the only public hospital in Australia to offer the ground-breaking da Vinci robotic heart surgery. Professor Tristan Yan explained that this advanced technology enables a less invasive approach, accessing the heart through a small keyhole-sized incision without cutting through the breastbone. “It means that the recovery for patients is easier, faster, with less bleeding and pain,” he said, emphasizing the life-changing potential of this innovation.

Astonishing Recovery

Elio’s surgery was a resounding success, and his recovery was nothing short of remarkable. Within a mere two days, he was discharged from the hospital, and just a week later, he was back to his daily routine, taking his son to school and even tending to his garden. In a follow-up appointment, a mere four weeks post-surgery, Elio proudly demonstrated his ability to do push-ups, a feat that would be strictly prohibited for patients undergoing traditional open-chest surgery.

A Testament to the Transformative Power of Trust, Technology
& Compassionate Care

While Elio expressed immense gratitude for Professor Yan’s expertise, he also acknowledged the invaluable role played by his nursing colleagues. “They were outstanding, always professional, and provided so much empathy and care,” he said, his voice filled with emotion. “Of course, the credit generally does go to the surgeons, but it really does take a whole team. It really was like being in the hands of family.”

Elio’s journey is a powerful reminder of the preciousness of life and the transformative impact of trust, technology, and compassionate care. At RPA Hospital, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of cardiac innovation, while never losing sight of the human connection at the heart of everything we do. We are honoured to have been a part of Elio’s story and to continue serving our community with the same dedication and empathy that defines the essence of RPA.
